How to make and Old PC a Media Server?

I have an old PC that I want to make a Media Server. Looking just to host music, photos, movies. It would not be hooked to a television or anything. Whats the best way to do this? I would reformat the machine to what it was originally - XP home. Would it be better to make it Ubuntu? I would want to map a drive on my network computers so I know it would need a static address. How to make and Old PC a Media Server?

I reckon you shud try simplecentre, Download one of the free programs and add all content onto individual types like movies, songs, and pictures. Connect the pc to ur router thru a network cable and all the files will pop up on ur PS3 or any media server that is attached to your TV. Use network sharing to copy files into your Media Server. hope this helps
