I just finished building a new machine and need to transfer a ton of files and programs from my old computer. I have some ethernet cable I used to connect the two but I can't figure out how to network them. I want to be able to access and move things from my old machine to the new one.
Also, is there a way to run a program that is located on the other machine without transferring. I have a game that I have since lost the key for and am unable to install it but would like the better performance of running it on my new machine. Thanks a lot.How do I network my two computers together?
You need what's known as a ';crossover'; or ';null modem'; cable. They look exactly like ordinary Ethernet cables, but the wires inside aren't all straight-through. They're designed to hook two computers (and only two!) together without modems. A good electronics store (Radio Shack, MicroCenter) should have some on the shelf.
Regarding the remote running: Not particularly. Running it on the non-host CPU would cause it to try to use that machine's drives, directories and Registry. 'Twouldn't work.
Now for the really bad news: Without the installation disk, you may not be able to transfer the game (or any other software) successfully. Installations often put additional files in non-obvious directories and store critical values in the Registry.
Hope that helps. How do I network my two computers together?
All you have to do is make on of these!
