The modems are hard-wired into my PC, and is working perfectly. However, my mom's laptop cannot connect to the internet. On the laptop's connection screen, it says that the computer is connected to our network, but we cannot use the internet, getting a 'Cannot connect' or 'address not found' message.
The cable guy came back over to try and figure it out, to no avail.
Together we brainstormed 3 possible ideas as to what is preventing the laptop from fully connecting:
1. There is some old Qwest software on the laptop that we cannot find, which is eating up the signal.
2. Several ports on the laptop or my Desktop may be off, which we will need to turn on for the signal to get through. Which ports, I have no idea.
Or 3. The wifi card in the laptop is outdated, not compatible, ect, etc. what-have-you.
ANYONE with ANY idea as to how to fix this, a reply with said information would be greatly appreciated.Laptop cannot connect to new wireless broadband network?
I used to work for a major telecom that provided DSL service so let me start with this:
All 3 of those solutions are bullshit. The cable installer knows NOTHING about technical support and they train him to tell you that its one of those 3 options. It's basically technical support code for ';I dont know what the problem is but you are too stupid to know I dont what the problem is and you obviously dont know what the problem is so I can make up some **** and have it sound technical and you wont know any better and get frustrated and leave me alone so I can leave your house';
Having said that...
It is more than likely just your IP address. I am going to assume you are running windows XP. If you are do this:
Go to start and run and type in ncpa.cpl then hit enter.
A window will come up and there should be an icon that says Wireless Connection.
Right click on it and go to properties.
Then highlight (do not uncheck) Internet Protocol TCP/IP
Then click Properties below it.
Then make sure there is a dot by the bubble that says ';obtain and IP address automatically and again for obtain DNS automatically'; Then hit Ok.
Try the internet, it should work.
---IF NOT---
Determine if your Router (the box that does wireless -- NOT THE MODEM) was provided by the internet service provider OR if you bought the router yourself.
If the Router came from the internet service provider call THEIR technical support.
If the Router came from the store, call the manufacturer for technical support.Laptop cannot connect to new wireless broadband network?
If there is Qwest software, you can bypass this by using windows default program. I think its wireless Zero, something like that.
